Miranda Updike

My paintings represent human bonding and interaction in a high-tech era that tends to foster isolation. Many of my crowd paintings are viewed from an aerial perspective. There is loveliness to the accidental placement of people in the streets seen, say, from the fourteenth floor of a skyscraper – A littering of colored shapes and shadows, which move above asphalt and street lines, express a brand of contemporary splendor.

I also work on a mixed media sub-series, resembling uncertain seascapes of ellipses that jut forward, recede and end below a moody sky at the horizon so the viewer feels a part-of-the-pack, experiencing the weight, mass and muscle of a crowd.
